Individual and Family Services

A Speech and Language Assessment is a comprehensive “study” of one’s abilities in any of the following areas:

  • Articulation – the production of speech sounds
  • Receptive Language – the understanding of words and sentences and the meaning of language
  • Expressive Language – being able to put thoughts into words and sentences verbally and in writing
  • Fluency – the rhythm, flow, and smoothness of speech
  • Voice – the quality, pitch, and loudness of one’s voice
  • Pragmatic Language – the social language we use in our interactions with others including non-verbal communication (i.e. tone, facial expressions, body language) and higher level skills (i.e., sarcasm, humor, executive functioning)

Assessments can be formal, gathering standardized scores, OR informal, using a file review of previous testing, records, clinical interview, observations, and checklists. Both include a written report including analysis and recommendations.
